Couples Counseling for Emotional Disconnection
When a relationship starts to feel more like a shared routine than a partnership, it can be difficult to know how to find each other again. You may still manage the household and show up for everyone else, yet feel lonely together. Couples counseling offers space to understand what changed and what each of you needs now.
When you feel more like roommates
Emotional distance does not always begin with a major crisis. Conversations may stay focused on logistics. Affection or curiosity may fade. One partner may reach for connection while the other pulls back, and both can end up feeling misunderstood. Sometimes you avoid a difficult topic to keep the peace, only to feel further apart. These patterns are common reasons couples reach out, even if they cannot point to a single event.
How couples counseling can help
Viktoriya Chiliy, LMFT, works with couples to slow down their usual interactions and make room for a different conversation. Sessions can help you name what has been missing, hear each other without immediately defending or withdrawing, and explore ways to reconnect that fit your relationship. The aim is not to assign blame or force closeness. It is to understand the distance and decide together what steps feel possible.
What if one of us feels the distance more?
Partners do not need to arrive with the same description of the problem. One person may feel lonely while the other feels overwhelmed or unsure what would help. Counseling provides a place for both perspectives. You can start by talking about what daily life feels like now and what each of you hopes might change.

When you have become good at running a household but miss being close.
You may coordinate schedules, children, and work while rarely talking about yourselves. In therapy, we can look at when that distance grew and what makes it difficult to reach for each other now. A small starting point might be setting aside a conversation that is not about logistics and noticing what helps each person feel heard. If one of you has stopped trying because earlier attempts ended in disappointment, that hesitation belongs in the room too.
